‘Colour has always been very important to me and it is the first element you see before the composition. Colour is what keeps your eye engaged and I think of these pieces as meditations.’

The Ritual to Aesthetics

Matt Root

‘A teacher of mine once said that if you enjoy the act of painting, you are probably not very good at it.’

Matt has been combining old star atlases with religious and cultural icons, presenting them as shrines or monuments. Through these images he asks questions of identity and ownership within the American landscape. He is currently focusing on objects and aesthetics that symbolize the cultural conflicts of life on the US/Mexico border.
