Future City: A Phantasmagoric Organism
What role does the frame play in your collages? Is it used to freeze the moment you capture or to create a border between your proposal and the viewer?
15 lungs, 10 kidneys and 13 hearts. It is not the imagination of a mad surgeon. It is the most probable design of the future city. I suppose, it is productive to imagine the future city as a system of living organisms, a system which works according to the principles of existing – or, maybe, even not (yet) existing and purely phantasmagoric – organisms. There are new systems and organisms of phantasmagoric creations by which unfamiliar principles of the future city will function. Hence, we can speak about integration of new unfamiliar elements into an organism of the city and buildings as well.
How dynamic would interactions between various new city parts look like in the future? This forces us to look deeper into the the processes of biocementation. To ‘heal the wound” Dutch scientists from TU Delft use calcite-precipitating bacteria and even invent self-healing, “living” concrete. We are be able to expand our understanding of the city structure/frame and include machines, microorganisms and even cybercreatures, along with human beings, into the group of “frame users”. Hence, we could design new city landscapes which evolve over time. Where maybe these new elements which are integrated directly into the building frame as these smart bacteria could be bugs and glitches. What is about cybercementation of the building or city? These new building elements are capable tof becoming an integral part of its structure, either as the frame or a generative body. It means we start to detach from the building as something but rather understand that it can keep evolving and growing.
What influences your choice of imagery for the collages?
I am a fan of a science fiction literature, Isaac Asimov is my favorite writer. I trust that Isaac Asimov’s works would have a stronger and more provocative impact on conceptual thinking compared to thousands of textbooks about construction mechanics. Supposedly, in the future cybernetic agglomerations of the megalopolis will grow on its own and erase the concept of “physical object”. Hence, architects should build the buildings under essentially new laws of cyberphysics and functional problems of new habitat without a “physical component”. I am more a fan of cyberliterature, than cyberarchitecture!
How come you always explore collage from a two dimensional perspective but never dwell on how this can be developed three dimensionally? (Models, relief paintings?)
My collages are always combinations of various elements. Sometimes they are a combination of manual drawings and computer graphics, as Adobe Photoshop. At times I also like to experiment with models which can be done with different materials such as polystyrene, cardboard and an usual soft ceiling tile. Other times I value computer modelling (3D Max) which is subsequently processed through Adobe Photoshop. In this case, the ‘fluent’ model is only necessary for the “initial pattern”. Generally, all of the main graphic processes of the model, are either crafted through hand drawings interactions or with graphic programs (Corel Draw, Photoshop). I suppose all these various elements are “text language”. To describe a certain activities of special “organ”, component or an element of the building (city) the particular “text language” is necessary. Betweentimes, it is possible to describe certain components by that “text language”, but simultaneously impossible to tell story about other using the same one.
To what extent might the digitalization of the art of collage defy the very textural essence of it?
The city of the future has got a structure of a phantasmagoric organism; claims us to develop new and unfamiliar language capable to describe it. A series of my graphic short stories or novels about the future city is an attempt to compose this language.
