Who influences you graphically?
For long time I’ve been deeply influenced by mechanical drawings. I was collecting exploded views and perspective sections of almost everything: Santa Maria della Salute, the space Shuttle, Gundham, optical lenses. I was fascinated by precision and by the chance those drawings were giving to have a simultaneous view of the components and of the whole. It was a time I wanted to know, to understand completely the process behind things. I wanted to know the truth. I called this period “ Maximum Visibility”. Then I realized I wanted more. More than what was visible. I wanted also the stories behind and within my projects.After the truth, I wanted my architectures had secrets.So I started looking at some non-figurative artist such as Lawrence Weiner, Ugo Rondinone. Artist able to create with a few words big misunderstandings. “ Where do we go from here?”.
Would you define yourself as a colourist?
Definitely I would not define me a colorist.Not a painter, nor a photographer.Color requires a special talent, education, an extended range of view. A proper spectrum. For that reason I always ask materials to have a specific role within space. I let materials introduce tones, patterns, opacity or reflection into architecture. Colors appear. Materials exist.They really influence space through their essence.
How do you see your work relating to that of Carlo Scarpa?
One of the first works of architecture I visited a s student, was Palazzo Abatellis. An italian palazzo from XVI century renewed by Carlo Scarpa. A teacher showed me something hidden behind a wooden panel: it was an original pencil sketch Carlo Scarpa had drawn while the construction was in progress, in order to explain the carpenters how to build a detail. So I could have been somehow directly influenced by his work. But actually I would simply say that both Scarpa and I are deeply rooted into a sophisticate Italian world, suspended somewhere between an enormous architectural catalogue of spaces and the extraordinary mastery of fine artisans. Like Scarpa I deeply intend the role of architecture as a mediation between man and the void. Without architecture we don’t perceive categories as “extension”, “distance”, “presence”: space. Like Scarpa I found my work as the discipline which gives shape and matter to this mediation.
What is your take on the art of collage? A means of adding layers to a proposal?
Collage as a technique has the virtue of being very direct. I am a very direct person. I always have the tendency to get directly to the core of things. Both in life and in my work. I like the way in a collage you can match different realities without any mediation.The classical mythology which gave birth to a certain mediterranean way of thinking was te literary equivalent of collage. Chimeras, Mermaids, Centaurs where collage of different living beings, able to describe the mysterious nature of life.
You mainly explore your work through axonometric and perspective views, do you trust these are more inclusive and convey the project in a more effective way compared to the typical plan/elevation?
As a student I immediately started seeking for a kind of space which was almost impossible to draw in plain views. I remember being desperate for having a clear idea of the space in my mind and not having the proper instruments to catch it and fix on paper. I strongly believe any author needs to build its own instruments. They are directly connected to the kind of art and language you can imagine and realize. It is impossible to think my projects in 2d. They exist in a way which goes far beyond the chance to put them on paper. It is not only “experience vs. theory”. It is about extension and influence. If you limit the space to the dimensions you can represent, you end pursuing very limited realities.
Born in 1977, Francesco Librizzi graduated in Architecture at Facoltà di Architettura di Palermo. In 2005 he founded Francesco Librizzi Studio, an architectural practice based in Milano involved in architecture, interiors, exhibition design and product design.
