A New Metro Station

Federico Silvestri Anna Bazzo

The new Clichy-sous-bois metro station is based on a research considering the SDRIF (Le Schéma Directeur de la Région Île-de-France ), the documents provided by AIGP studies, beyond the socioeconomic phenomena studied by Jane Jacobs. This project would deal with one of the weaknesses of the Parisian metropolis; the quality of the periphery.

The requalification project has been developed in Haut Clichy, located in the North-East of Paris, and consists of three main actions:raise the density, designing a new urban front and to establish a new centre.

The neighborhood’s design is based on the renovated public transportation net, established by PRU (Projet de rénovation urbaine), and consists of a pedestrian area, reachable by streets which like a comb penetrates into the urban fabric. The roads which enclose the district has been relocated outside of it, granting a quiet space in the avenue, protected by the building placed between the road and the two pedestrian axes that divides the neighborhood into 4 blocks.

The building that hosts the main functions of the market square and the metro station, is situated in the middle of the axes. It appears as a object that floats in the ground, and in contrast with his apparently simplicity, it has an high functional complexity. The circulation is what shaped the building, in fact split the flux and interconnect horizontally and vertically the 4 portions of the building. the basement is divided into two sides, chopped by the vertical volume, which is connect with the metro station, becoming one of its entrances. the tower is 60m high is crossed by the square which host two differents sides, one already organized by commercial activities and another one more flexible, and open to host different activities encourage by the inhabitants.

Interview

You only explore your proposal through technical drawings, why so?

The technical drawings and the collage are every time efficient tools in describing the architectonic aspects and the functionality of the building.

What role do the colours blue and red play in opposed to the black? (blue for furniture and people? Why the choice of colour – red for background? Why? )

Colours are used to deal with the scientific aspect of the representation.

As you are proposing a public building what would be the effect of investigating it sensually through the passenger experience perspective?

This kind of representation is really in vogue now and has extraordinary examples like the works of Baukuh, Dogma and Thomas Raynaud and Elias Guenoun, that are taking inspiration directly from the past. At the same time the collage that is strongly geometrical and is related with Mantova and two masterpieces of its heritage; the Camera degli sposi, and the Mantegna’s house, has the role of showing the atmosphere of the project.

You mention the building as something that fluctuates, how do you think you could have explored this graphically?

What is lacking  is more abstraction, something that tries to summarise with a picture the concepts of the project, and plays with them to rough out a “caricatures“ of the building.
