Interview

Who influences you graphically?

From the very beginning of our careers we were fascinated with different fields of arts, from photography to paintings. For us cinema is a fundamental reference for what concern representation. We like the idea of montage: choosing an image with a certain meaning, choosing an other one and then combine them together in order to express something else. The montage is a perfect way, for us, to express a specific condition and the floating of time in that space.

You frequently explore your proposals through the axonometric, to what extent do you trust this gives a 360 degree perception of your design?

During these years we have tried to explore graphic representation in some of its fields, but we realised that axonometric drawings are always very clear and fundamentally expressive. For this reason we decide to represent the building through the axo, in order to relate the building with the context and to have an aleatory idea of the whole system, to the small scale, in which you can design and control details and imagine specific situationsn that animate the space.

 

What is the effect and purpose of a central perspective for your internal views?

One-point perspective leads the public into the action, as if the three dimensional effect created made the viewer “enter” the scene, instead of seeing it from afar. In this way the perspective generate a sense of normality for all the elements that follow the line of the perspective, but at the same time it gives an ambiguity to all the other elements that are set off these lines.

 

The two perspective views appear as staged and framing a specific moment in time, was this intentional and how do you chose to frame an image?

The idea of staging is for us the fundamental concept of making architecture. Staging is not just a form of design but also a way of express contents and ideas. When we start designing a space we mainly imagine it as a stage for new situations. So the process of making architecture becomes something like staging a cinematographic scene in which architecture is just a set for the conditions.

 

How does the style with which you explore the proposal reflect the function of the design and its atmosphere?

5 With our drawings we try to arouse particular feelings in the spectator. Thanks to the study of different pieces of arts, through the analysis of the work of many photographers and cinema directors, we tried to recreate a specific atmosphere. So for us, as architects, the way of representing feelings is very important. In our images and drawings the selection of textures, shots and colors is chosen in order to try to reach this intellectual perfection. But we are still working on it!
