INNESTI

ROBOCOOP

Project

Conceived and produced by radioarchitettura and CultRise, INNESTI is a personal show by the Rome- based urban art duo ROBOCOOP, active in the scene since 2012 with urban art installations, exposing a suggestive site specific installation and a series of unpublished works.

The first exhibition took place in the Monti area, a marvellous neighborhood in the heart of Rome, in The Popping Club, a contemporary art gallery in a former public transportation substation transformed into a cultural site.

The project was then hosted in Milan, for the Design Week, in the creative graphic studio for architecture Di-ora-ma. For this opportunity, the project works were combined by a new site-specific installation, a homage to the iconic Milan architecture.

A special exploration that combined art and architecture through graphics mash-ups and collages. ROBOCOOP exposed some unpublished works based on Piranesi, engraver of the XVIII century, elaborated again through photographic grafts of modern roman architectures planned by that roman architects’ generation almost forgotten by the criticism of that times provoking a strong contrast between classical style and modernity.

What is an in·nè·sto /?

The graft is a practice that derives its origin from the botany, with which it intends the insertion of a new kind of plant in an existing one. But when it acquires a figured sense, then the graft becomes an planning operation, a practice of formal research: here, therefore, abandoned landscapes, temples, thermal baths, churches and triumphal arches become completely denatured through operations of juxtaposition, insertion and substitution of architectural elements.

Interview

What defined the concept for this FuoriSalone installation?

We’re invited by studio Di-ora-ma, an Architecture practice based in Milan and Paris, making a site-specific installation for the FuoriSalone in the occasion of the Milano Design Week. We’re very pleased to make an exhibition for this event: after the success of INNESTI (Graftings) in Rome, our first personal exhibition into a gallery curated by radioarchitettura and produced by CultRise, we thought that it could be good keeping some of these works in Milan, but also proposing new works about this city and its architecture. For this event, we showed some works about Rome and Milan, starting from old engravings of these cities and keeping light on some iconic modern architectures but also some hidden and not appreciated ones.

How does the conceptual image develop into a three dimensional space?

This a topic question! We tried to make a create a new space into the space: working with large format paper and searching to reproduce as much as possible into the scale 1:1 the perspective of this space, we pasted up on the wall an image that mashes up an old engraving by Marcantonio Dal Re representing the interior space of Teatro della Scala with the interior view of the Grattacielo Pirelli designed by Giò Ponti and Pierluigi Nervi. We also worked on a small series, starting from the same engraving but variating the modern graftings with three different modern architectures of Milan, according to the three types of grafting (front facade, side extension, top juxtaposition).

What is the purpose of the installation and what is the reaction you are hoping to get?

Our proposal is to create an unique space: we hope that people feel apart of this installation visiting the exhibition and feeling good walking into this new modern theatre However, our aim is not to create a realistic space, but imaginated one. It will not ever exist, but we dream that it could be possible: that’s a theater aim, a fictional willing to mix art and architecture.
