Evoking Atmospheres of Youth And Childhood

Julia Saraikina & Taisiya Afinogenova

This architectural competition in 15 Russian cities is a part of the big project of improvement of main public spaces. New, modern and convenient public spaces in the Russian cities will appear within the next years. In each city it will be arranged well from three to twelve public spaces among which there are streets, squares, parks and embankments.

We chose Astrakhan city. There is the big park (3,3 hectares) in the city center.

Our project is developed according to the principles of environmental friendliness, comfort and safety with the purpose to increase quality of the urban environment and level of attractiveness of an object. After the careful analysis of the territory the following strategy of its development were allocated:

  • to keep the existing framework pedestrian ways, to strengthen system of paths and to connect them with the main points of an attraction of the park and entrance areas;
  • to keep functional zoning with upgrading the playgrounds, a zone of entertainments, and also with adding a trade point (the place for fairs), a sports zone, the place for walking of dogs (with the specialized equipment);
  • to keep all existing greenery by gently and carefully integrating it into the new master plan with adding new green “areas” (the apple garden, the maple avenue, a zone of artificial landscape and local improvement;
  • to use the modern, interesting, integrated by one style small architectural forms answering to regulations of environmental friendliness and comfort in improvement of the park;
  • to add the new key object of the park designed to diversify ordinary walking routes (the pedestrian bridge);
  • to develop the recommendations concerning appearance of theater and seasonal use of a different type of activities.

The system of ways was improved by creation of the related network of the paths (with distinction on levels of intensity of use) and development of the park squares in front of sign objects (entrance areas, theater, the fountain, activity zones). The main highlight is the pedestrian bridge. It is the semi-ring route surrounding the central core of the park.

Our concept paid much attention to “stuffing” and activities of main zones. So each functional zone received modern, interesting, sometimes the intricate designs (for example, in the children’s town, or a zone of attractions) adding originality to all project decision.

Who influences you graphically?

In our concept design of the park, we used several types of graphics, which complements and reveals each other. We believe that a park should evoke childhood impressions, dreams and a sense of freedom, therefore we applied the simple, intuitively comprehensible graphics, which broadcast the emotional atmosphere of our proposal. For example, the axonometry with the merry-go-round, which is well-known symbol of childhood, attracts viewer’s attention instantly and makes him or her to explore the project in detail to find other interesting solutions.

During the graphics developing of the perspective views, we were inspired by travel posters of 1930x – 1970x. Colorful, artistic, atmospheric, they call to visit the place, which is depicted on them. We decided to use this graphic technique as we wanted to evoke the desire of the audience to immerse into the atmosphere of youth and childhood.

What defined the aesthetic language for the proposal?

Our choice of aesthetic language was determined to attract the attention of various groups of individuals of different ages. We used soft colors for illustrations and schematic graphic style for axonometry with comic scenarios that would remind adults of their young years and enrapture the children. In order to better understand the master plan of the park we highlighted the most significant areas with a dark-red color. We believe that the right graphic choice can help the viewer easily navigate the project and identify the key points instantly.

What defined the use of the axonometric and perspective drawings to reveal the project?

Axonometric drawings were used primarily to demonstrate visually the range of activities that were conceived in our proposal. We used 3D visualizations to describe typical solutions, as well as specific fragments, where all possible scenarios that occur on the territory could be easily observed. In addition, the project participated in the competition, and it was very important to show the variety of small architectural forms, information points, food courts, etc.

Perspective views demonstrate the key points of the park – the main square with Concert Hall and views from the entrance areas. Moreover, the illustrations show how site changes during the seasons (summer/winter) and time of the day (day/night).

What role do the silhouettes play and why do they all belong to different epochs?

Choosing silhouettes for illustrations we kept the idea of travel posters of 1930x – 1970x that is why the silhouettes belong to different epochs. Moreover, in our axonometric pictures – where you can observe comic scenes – were used Sanaa people, which intensify curiosity and make viewer to dig into the atmosphere of all that’s happening.
