Devenir_Drawing To Raise The Right Answers

Reda Mellah (Gent Universiteït, Belgium) & Danial Shahmoradi (Isfahan Art University, Iran)

Project

The river is dry. No more geographical limit.

Isfahan is an urban grid.

This project makes the grid continuous from one side of the river to the other, creating a smaller scale grid. once the grid is extruded, some islands are born. each island contains a Devenir. Who you are where you are. the river becomes an archipelago of Devenirs, each island carries an activity, each island carries a memory… it is a theme park. jumping from one island to the other is jumping from one memory to the other. Your devenir is called into question each time and its illimited.

Model

The bridges are useless. The bridges are beautiful. They become spectators of the new public space. Their devenir is a public space where inhabitants can witness the past of the wet and green land.

As Robert Smithson’s art work Spiral, the river grid could accomodate the water if it comes back one day and disappear under it during a certain period of time. It reappears to fill in the blank and revive the memory.

So as to convince a stubborn bunch of jury members and to be able to tackle the question of memory, we decided to be inspired by the Iranian old paintings called “Miniatures” so as to adopt language they may be familiar with.

Interview

Who influences you graphically?

The Persian Miniature. While Europe knew the rise of perspective during Rennaissance, Persians used the Miniatures to represent some everyday scenes but also landscapes. It works as a compilation and superposition of flat layers and each one has a precise message, without seeking any realistic effect. We are living today the obsolescence of the realistic image, many young offices are leading this “Moda” just as OFFICE KGVDS, NP2F….

What is your take on colour?

Joyful and playful are the keywords for this project. I don’t really have one take on colour but the colours try to fit with what the program need to show. It is the first time I use that much colours by the way. In this case (attraction park or a Disneyland) I needed a sort of a childish atmosphere that makes things readable for all.

What is the effect and purpose of the white frame?

A Miniature has always a frame, most of time framed by the beautiful Persian poems. In 2017, I believe we go back to a  zero degree of architecture and representation; the white and empty frame is its expression.

What was your work process in terms of concept development and production of images in the short week available?

We didn’t seek for answers but we rather looked for raising the right answers. The question of the dry Zayand Rud was really a sensible political question. The time was short and we decided to go beyond any analysis and propose a radical project, an infinite grid. Isfahanis are familiar to the grid concept and it was very simple to explain what would happen on each Island. People’s Devenir changes from one island to the other.

If you could explore the project further what would be your next steps?

There would no more steps. The reason is that this project is born from a “bombing speculation of ideas”. A next step perhaps could have been another idea.
