Carved Systems is a research-led inquiry into the development of vernacular architecture speculating on the future of habitable spaces. Sensible and anonymous, spontaneous yet calculated, the work explores the return and re-inhabitation of neglected spaces, taking a computer-generated approach to vernacular architecture. The development of these systems relies on an algorithm that adheres to vernacular principles and utilizes speculative environmental and behavioural datasets to define spatial parameters. It is responsive, instantly adaptive, and precisely anticipates spatial development. "Carved Systems" explores how algorithms can learn from vernacular architecture, supporting future communities in reclaiming agency over their habitable spaces. The project was developed at the Royal College of Art.
