Floyd Bennett Field, a hidden gem in South Brooklyn, is a place where history, nature, and potential collide. Once a collection of islands, it became New York City’s first commercial airport in 1931, later transforming into a WWII Naval Air Station. Today, it hosts military and NYPD training while also serving as an underappreciated haven for birdwatchers. Despite its national park status, the site feels forgotten— unwelcoming to visitors, with abandoned buildings deteriorating across the landscape. The project aims to breathe new life into this historic site. Recognizing the surrounding neighborhood's lower high school graduation and income rates than the rest of New York City, it envisions a trade school offering hands-on learning and an alternative education path for Brooklyn residents. The project was developed within the context of the City Island Studio led by David Eugin Moon, Cornell Department of Architecture.
