The concept of a city's identity, including its visual representation, is explored through Italo Calvino's depiction of “Eudoxia” in Invisible Cities, a city visualised as a carpet. Incorporating the architectural theory of Kevin Lynch, this study examines how urban images are shaped by the viewer's perception. By shifting Lynch’s research and examining memories and expectations, the contemporary image of Lisbon is revealed. The city’s status as a major tourist destination brings both benefits and challenges that are often ignored, as if hidden under a metaphorical carpet.
