Questioning the future of hyperdense city, the Urban Mantelpiece explores the possibility of building on top of the already existing urban fabric as a speculative response that tests the extent of sustainable development. Opposed to merely building new taller tower or sprawling outwards, the symbiotic proposal minimises major demolition or exploitation of natural landscape as well as conserving urban identity.
The elevated urban infill brings to light the insufficiency of the current city development model. It aims to invoke for a scheme with the least environmental impact and the most efficient use of what already is there but often neglected - from roofscape to alleyways, while ensuring a pleasant neighbourhood through resilient place-making approach, embedding the new within the old.
